What Are Trigger Points?

Trigger points occur when small bundles of muscle fibers contract around an injured joint or irritated tissue and become “stuck” together. Often times, even after an underlying issue clears, adhesions (like a scab on a cut) remain, preventing the fibers from functioning properly.

As a common cause of chronic complaints, trigger points can be very difficult to resolve. For conditions that do not respond to massage therapy or physical therapy, TPI (sometimes including homeopathic ingredients like Zeel or Traumeel) can provide dramatic results. These solutions are injected directly into the trigger points and have been proven to be just as beneficial as synthetic pharmaceutical therapies, but without the troubling side effects.

After applying a “freeze spray” or topical numbing agent, saline solution or a combination of saline solution and other natural ingredients that possess both anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties, are injected into the trigger point. These solutions relieve muscular spasms, knots, and adhesions allowing the tissue to function properly. TPIs can be used to relieve pain in the neck, back and shoulders.

TPIs often produce instant results. As soon as the injection takes place, the trigger point is made inactive and existing pain subsides. Several trigger points may be injected during a single appointment, providing significant relief. To ensure the best possible outcome, brief courses of maintenance care are often necessary and massage therapy or some other form of soft tissue work is prescibed.

Our nurse practitioners perform all trigger point injections and have received additional post graduate training in performing many different types of injections. They will also confer with the other providers on our staff to determine how these injections will be incorporated into your specific treatment plan. Immediately following TPI, we suggest you see one of our licensed massage therapists to maximize the effects of the injection.

With Integrative Health and Rehabilitation, you can be sure that you will receive the care you deserve. We are highly-skilled at what we do and will do all that we can to help you feel better.

How many visits does it take for TPIs to work?

Most patients receive 2 to 3 sets of injections, performed one to two weeks apart. Your unique response to these injections will help us determine whether or not additional injections are needed.

What are the risks?

TPI is extremely safe. However, no procedure is void of risk. On rare occasions, complications such as muscle soreness, infection, bleeding, and bruising can take place. Our nurse practitioner is careful, performing each injection with utmost care. If you have any questions for us, be sure to ask. We will provide you with honest, straightforward answers.

How much will this procedure cost?

Your “out of pocket” expense for TPIs will depend upon the number of treatments and on your specific insurance coverage. If you don’t have insurance, contact our office to find out how to take advantage of our discounted care programs. We strive to make care affordable for everyone, regardless of your insurance status.
