Denver Chiropractor Makes You Stronger!

Chiropractic is known for relieving back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Did you know Denver chiropractor makes you stronger? A study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology described how this happens. This study looked at chiropractic and how it acts as a performance enhancer for athletes of all skill levels.

The study, titled “The effects of a single session of spinal manipulation on strength and cortical drive in athletes”, explains why athletes love chiropractors. The study documented the power generated by the soleus muscle (in the calf) in a group of elite martial arts athletes before and after a chiropractic adjustment. The group receiving a chiropractic adjustment experienced increased strength of contraction for 30 minutes after the adjustment. They also had an increase in spinal excitability for another 60 minutes. This “increased excitability” means a stronger nerve impulse to the muscle.  Researchers noted that the adjustments resulted in a stronger muscular contraction which means more strength!

Earlier studies in the Brain Sciences Journal measured the electrical activity in the muscles of patients before, during, and after a chiropractic adjustment. They also saw a significant increase in cortical drive (and therefore greater muscle contraction) after the chiropractic adjustment.

Peer-reviewed studies have also examined the effects of chiropractic adjustments in patients that had lost strength after suffering a stroke. The group of study participants that received chiropractic care were able to regain the strength lost after their strokes.

Chiropractic Helps Amateur and Professional Athletes

Unfortunately, one Chiropractic adjustment won’t turn you into a world champion power lifter. However, these studies are evidence that chiropractic provides benefits to athletes beyond simple pain relief and increased range of motion.

That’s why chiropractors are members of the training staff of almost every professional US sports team, including the training teams of professional golfers, tennis players, and other athletes participating in individual sports. In fact, the 2018 US Winter Olympics team had a staff of five chiropractors just for their athletes. Elite athletes understand the importance and performance-enhancing benefits of chiropractic.

Stronger is better. It means better stamina, better balance, better coordination, and better performance. What could you do with more strength?

Chiropractic Adjustments Improve Communication between the Brain and our Muscles

In a study conducted by the same team that looked at Tae Kwon Do athletes, they found that chiropractic adjustments increase in the way the brain could affect muscle contraction in a study subject’s arm.

To do this, the study measured the participant’s biceps muscle strength, and then measured ‘central inhibition’, before and after a single spinal adjustment. ‘Central inhibition’ is a bit like the brain’s handbrake on a muscle. There are two ways the brain can affects muscle contraction. It can either press on the “gas” or “lay on the brakes”.

By using the “TMS twitch interpolation technique”, researchers could measure to what degree the brain was putting the brakes on the muscle. Researchers found that the brain used the “brake” less on the biceps muscle after the study subject received a chiropractic adjustment. This is one of the reasons that studies showed chiropractic care could increase strength.
